On The Glam Side"Silicone What Price Beauty" ?By Morgan StevensAlso see Part Two of this series by Dr. Cerise Richards ...and Don't miss Morgan's TGF Pictorial! Seriously though, this month Doctor Cerise Richards and I have put our heads together to write a joint article on silicone and the dangers that can ensue, should you decide to have this substance placed in your body. My half of the article is, more a less, a historical perspective with some personal commentary added. While Dr. Richards will give you the complete low down on the medical end of things and just how dangerous putting silicone into your body can be. We hope you enjoy this article. But above all else, we both hope you take away from it an understanding that when it comes to changing your body to resemble that of a woman's,there are no quick fixes and to coin a phrase... "There Ain't No Free Lunch No More". For those of us ages mid thirty through early fifties, I am sure we have all seen a drag show or two. Whether it's been on television (in the form of documentary)or by just simply going to the great drag clubs of the past ,such as the 82 in NYC, the Glade in Honolulu ,or The Silver Frolics Club in New Orleans. When you went to these places, or saw something on television, your eyes quickly gravitated to the beautiful bodies that these girls displayed. And if you were like me, back in those early days, you sat there in a dual state of amazement and envy. On more than one occasion, I left the Glade in Hawaii, wanting to find the first available doctor that I could go to who would shoot me full of silicone to give me full breasts and curvy hips and thighs. Then of course as soon as my envy wore off and reality set in I'd ask myself ..... Are you nuts Morgan ? Back in those days (i.e. the mid seventies) a lot of girls ,that I either worked with or knew, went and had what was commonly referred to as "the Silicone Pump Job". What that entailed was, finding "a less than scrupulous medical person", who would take a needle of raw industrial grade silicone and blast it into your breasts, hips, thighs cheekbones of wherever else you wanted it put. When it first went into your body the results were amazing. Namely, "instant female body shape" in matter of and hour or two, depending on how much you wanted shot into you and how fast they could get it into you. Many of the most gorgeous pageant queens from the past, were walking monuments to silicone body sculpting. The stuff worked like a charm and it gave you the results you wanted. But then, something strange started to happen. Many a show queen began to notice that silicone had a nasty tendency to move. Likewise, it had a nasty tendency to move to places in your body that you didn't want it in. Not only that, but it also had a resounding tendency to harden (as in cement like). Thus, those beautifully bouncy boobs that a lot of girls had ,suddenly became about as "soft and bouncy" as balls on a pool table. I remember an acquaintance of mine in New Orleans, who woke up one morning only to discover that her luscious breasts were lodged just above her belly button and one had even begun to move towards her abdomen. You can well imagine her fear when she awoke that morning. And to make matters worse, the "so called doctor" who did this was no where to be found. I can also remember ,while I was attending law school in Chicago (circa 1978), going to a show one night at the famous Baton Club on Clark Street. I watched two beautifully stunning queens take rolling pins and literally push the silicone up from the area of their knee caps trying to get it back into place in their thighs where it was supposed to be. They accomplished what they set out out do, but I stood there in utter amazement watching and thinking.. is this what they have to go through every time ? Even now a days, despite untold warnings from the medical community, the Surgeon General's Office and the like, there are still girls out there who use this stuff, all the while thinking, it's just what they want. Recently, I heard that there is a woman who goes around the country to the major drag pageant sites(where body enhancing is allowed) and for a nice price, will pump girls full of silicone just before the pageant to give them "the right curves in the right places". Does winning a drag pageant mean so much, that you have to gamble with your life ? I hope not. No doubt about it plastic surgery (in this day and age) is very expensive. I ought to know. By way of example, for my rhinoplasty , breast implants, lipo suction transfers, lip enhancements, cheekbones and the like I have spent well over $12,000. But at least, I have the security of knowing that nothing on me is going to end up where it isn't supposed to be and that the procedures that I had done, were done by a licensed and board certified medical doctor/plastic surgeon. What I am getting at girls is simply this.... don't fall prey to a quick fix. Don't give in to your temptations. This stuff (silicone) is dangerous and in some cases it will kill you ,if it ever invades the delicate parts of your body such as your liver. I cannot emphasize enough ,stay away from this stuff. No matter what you have heard in the past as to how safe or wonderful it may be... don't believe a word of it. If you want to change your appearance ,to that of a woman, for God sakes go to a board certified plastic surgeon. Go through the psychological counseling if need be. Take your time, carefully size up your options and then go and get the enhancements done. Silicone and quick fixes are not the answer and they never were. A FEW OTHER THOUGHTS...... IN A SIMILAR VEIN On Sunday, May 6, 2001 an article appeared in the New York Times Sunday Magazine Section titled: Nip and Tuck Frequent-Flier Miles. The article explained how Thailand has become the plastic surgery/vacation spot of the world of late date and that it has also become the sex change capital of the world. Prominently featured was Dr. Preecha Tiewtranon and how he has managed to reduce the surgical time for the reassignment surgery and that he can also do the breast implants and trachea shave contamperaneously with the SRS. No doubt, Dr. Tiewtranon is a very skilled and qualified surgeon and has the results to back up his work product. (Please See footnote on that point). However, the article also went on to point out that although the results of SRS in Thailand are wonderful, Thailand is still a third world country and their standards of medical care may not be the same as we are accustomed to here in the good ol' USof A. {See the comments of Dr. Daniel Morello, MD. the current President of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery as they appear in the article on that issue}. Mind you, I am not "indicting" Thailand's doctors, nor am I saying that what they are doing is wrong... all I am saying is, here again ....don't be lured in by a quick fix. Just think of it this way... If you have/had any post operative complications, you just don't jump in you car and scoot on over to the Doctors office for a post op check up, when it happens to be some 9,000 miles away to the East. By now girls, I think you get the point. Be careful, be cautious and above all else be conservative. Don't give into that all tempting "quick fix" and whatever you do stay away from silicone. I now leave you in the prestigiously qualified hands of Dr. Richards who will examine the "medical end of things" on this issue. Footnote: If anyone is interested in seeing the amazing work of Dr. Tiewtranon just go to a web site from Australia called Gallery Of Goddesses. Go to the heading Goddesses of the Month. Take a look at the girl selected for March,2001 named Nat. She is Thai and if that is any example of what Dr. Tiewtranon can do, all I can say is WOW ! Needless to say, the Doctor does nice work.
